Tor is looking for stories no longer than 17,500 words, and they note that most stories fall around the 12,000 range. That means you have just over two weeks to send in your best speculative fiction stories. However, the Tor staff will read and respond to all stories submitted up until January 7. They state that they “do not plan to reopen in the foreseeable future.” In response, they’re indefinitely closing their short fiction submissions. Since most of their stories come in through consulting editors, they don’t have as much room to accept stories from the slush pile. This past Monday, Tor officially made the announcement on their site. Starting January 7, Tor will no longer be open for unsolicited submissions. Attention all science fiction and fantasy writers––you only have a couple of weeks left to break into one of the best-paying markets out there.
